Homes for Lambeth – Lambeth Council’s wholly-owned housing delivery company – has taken the keys for the first 20 new homes on Westbury Estate.
The new homes make up the first of 64 new council level rent homes being delivered in the first phase of the estate regeneration at Westbury. The homes are prioritised for residents on Westbury Estate and families on the housing waiting list. St James, the developers, are due to complete the rest of the new homes at Westbury in June 2021.
Commenting on the news, Caroline Pillay, Chair of Homes for Lambeth said: “It is a major milestone for Homes for Lambeth to take over these new homes from St James. To the families moving into these new apartments, it will mean a fresh start with a home that has more space and allow them to move on with their lives. Residents have been eager to move into their new homes and we cannot wait to have them join us. She added: This is an important milestone for the partnership between Homes for Lambeth, St James and Lambeth Council and evidence of the great work we can achieve together.”
Sean Ellis, Chairman, St James remarked at the event: “Westbury Estate provides an excellent example of how collaboration and flexible thinking can deliver a significantly better planning outcome. The benefit of early provision by St James of high-quality new homes for existing residents at Westbury Estate cannot be overstated. It has greatly assisted Lambeth’s estate regeneration and reassured residents they are central to the wider regeneration plans.”
Councillor Matthew Bennett, Lambeth Council’s lead for New Homes, welcomed the news and said: “I’m delighted that these 64 new council homes are ready for local families to move in. These homes are the first phase of the rebuilding of the Westbury estate – guaranteeing a great new home for our existing residents and providing more council and affordable homes for local families.”
Jason Emile, Director of Development at Homes for Lambeth said: “Our dedicated team at Homes for Lambeth have worked incredibly hard with our partners at Lambeth Council and St James to see these new homes on Westbury Estate reach completion. Despite the global pandemic, we have managed to deliver these new homes, providing Lambeth residents with safe and affordable homes to live in. This scheme also helps us to support the council’s goal to make Lambeth greener and cleaner, by reducing the carbon footprint by 35%.”
