Hey, my name is Filipa Baptista. I am the Social Investment Programme Assistant at Homes for Lambeth (HFL). I am part of the employability team. My day-to-day role involves liaising with training providers, Lambeth Council colleagues and contractors to ensure that the HFL and Lambeth residents can access and benefit from relevant learning opportunities, work placements and apprenticeships. I am also involved in the recruitment of apprentices and interns.
After ten years working in the education sector, I decided it was time for a career change, so in 2019, I started a new job at a law firm. However, due to the pandemic, I was furloughed for two months and eventually lost my job in June 2020. I saw an opportunity for an internship on the Homes for Lambeth LinkedIn page, and the advert encouraged Lambeth residents affected by COVID-19 to apply for a 12-week internship. I have worked and lived in Lambeth for the last 11 years, so I thought this role ticked all the boxes for me.
The internship allowed me to immerse myself in a new field, and I had the opportunity to understand the ethos of HFL. Furthermore, I gained new skills in a professional environment, and simultaneously, it opened new doors into a future career.
By partaking in an internship at HFL, you can gain real-life exposure, and it gives you a chance to determine if you are in the right career field. It provides you with first-hand experience in the real working world. By the end of my first week, I felt I was part of the team. They all made me feel welcomed and supported.
I only expected to be at Homes for Lambeth for 12 weeks, but after I concluded my internship I was lucky enough to take up a new role as Social Investment Programme Assistant.
Being an HFL resident myself, it has been a fantastic opportunity to participate in programmes that directly impact my community. I want to continue supporting our community to recover from the impact of Covid-19, assisting HfL residents with internships, apprenticeships, and work experience opportunities. Furthermore, I want to continue contributing to building an inclusive organisation reflective of our residents' diversity.
Aside from work, In my spare time, I like walking and reading. Before COVID-19, I also enjoyed swimming and going out to eat with friends, and I'm looking forward to be able to do that soon.
